SANDIMMUNE® (cyclosporine, USP)
Sandimmune (cyclosporine, USP) (see product safety information) is the original formulation of cyclosporine. Sandimmune Soft Gelatin Capsules and Oral Solution are indicated for the prevention of organ rejection in kidney, liver, and heart allogenic transplant patients. They may also be used to treat chronic rejection in patients previously treated with other immunosuppressive agents.
Neoral® (cyclosporine, USP) Modified (see product safety information) and Sandimmune are not bioequivalent and cannot be used interchangeably without careful monitoring of cyclosporine blood concentration and dosage adjustments based on individual response. Sandimmune is also available for injection as an intravenous concentrate.
The principal adverse reactions of cyclosporine therapy in transplantation are renal dysfunction, tremors, hirsutism, hypertension, and gum hyperplasia. Sandimmune is a systemic immunosuppressant and may increase susceptibility to infections and to the development of neoplasia.
