SIMULECT® (basiliximab)
Simulect (basiliximab) (see product safety information) is indicated for the prevention of acute organ rejection in renal transplant patients when used as part of an immunosuppressive regimen that includes cyclosporine and corticosteroids.
Simulect is a two-dose, high-affinity, monoclonal antibody that binds and blocks the interleukin-2 (IL-2) receptor on the surface of T lymphocytes. By blocking the IL-2 receptor, Simulect inhibits the IL-2 mediated activation of T lymphocytes, a critical pathway in the cellular immune response involved in allograft rejection.
The clinical benefit of Simulect was not limited to specific subpopulations based on age, gender, race, donor type (cadaveric or living donor graft) or history of diabetes mellitus.
In clinical trials, Simulect does not appear to add to the background of adverse events seen in organ transplantation patients as a consequence of their underlying disease and the concurrent administration of immunosuppressants and other medications.
